kiwi to the 8's
Re: kiwi to the 8's
Raced at the weekend with a disappointing result gearing it down was a mistake couldent get it to run any faster than 12'0s at 110mph and I forgot to take the 15 tooth sprocket out to the track with me . Then the Cdi shit its self but with some luck and a unknowen reason I had put a spear in the tool kit .
Did get some very good information off the data logger - takes me between .1 to .2 of a second to change gear so that means that during the course of a run I off the power for up to 1.6 seconds (data logger only runs at 10 samples a second) . Bike was always crossing the line at between 7900 and 8000 rpm , I was over reving in first gear every time , geting right out of the power band
So theres a bit of work before thd next meeting , new tyre to fit as the rear is now shagged , change the gearing back , fit the air shifter and pull the clutch ouf and have a look

Been more than a month since my last post but things have move forward if a little more slowly than i would have liked but then we had to move in to a motel for 3 weeks asl the builder and painters finaly carried out the earth quake repairs that where need post 7.1 earth quake 2 years ago
All the air shifter parts have arried from the USA finaly - the cyclinder was the hold up as up cause if i bought a new one the price to have it ship was just wrong so found one on ebay and got it here for an all up price of about $100 NZ - (50 pounds or there about) did make one stuff up when ordering the fittings and got a couple with 3/8 pipe thread not the 1/4 that i need , but then i placed the order when on night shift at like 4 am or some thing and i was tired

The clutch lever with the cables is for the data logger - you can send the data loger a signal and it will turn on the shift light at a pre set launch rpm , with then each gear progamable to the own shift point, the data logger see's the rpm drop between gear changes , that allows it to count the changes and know what gear the bikes in, very simple
And this morning EFE number 4 arrived on the truck from then north island - got this one for spears - engine cases , crank , head, gear box and clutch . Its missing the wiring loom , carbs, pipes and front brakes but arrived with a box of bits the the own no longer wanted and for the price was cheap

Bike was blue ex factory but has like a 1/16" of different paint schemes on

Its been red , brown , greeny blue with the final scheme mat black.
Now the wife made the surgestion that I put one of the 4 back on the road , some thing with more get up and go than the bandit 12 we use she surgested , so hatched a plan to do a 1230 sized motor , put gsxr forks on it and fit a better swing arm but its going to have to wait until I get the race EFE going a whole lot better

I like the sound of the wifes plan
you now have 4 efes, you don't need that many

Yes FBJ I loved the wifes idea, now need to have a major sort out in the garage of all my parts but think i have most of the stuff I need already just short of a set of pistons , exhust , up side down forks and some free time which is going to be the biggest problem but a plan has been hatched .................

Dont know about where you are but over here bandit 1200 forks are a good cheap viable option

This has been a good read, and well worth watching for updates.
On the subject of forks,I was using some Kawasaki zxr400 ones in my efe, which lowered it nicely, and they were cheap! I was running a sidewinder pipe too.
People in the UK dont seem to look at the lower cc bike forks for projects,so I know here, bargains can be had. Ive no idea what its like in your part of the World though?
With a bit of stretch in the swingarm you could have a really nice bike with these or similar fitted.

personally wouldn't recomend low CC forks due to the massive weight difference to the likes of an EF lump..................
i had the misfortune to find out that what i was told were GSXR1100 forks were in fact gsxr400 and wouldn't even cope with a light stop without bottoming out and trying to tuck

Thanks for the kind words dixiethedog its been interesting to keep track of this project in this forum as it not some thing i have ever done before , with my first efe race bike i didnt keep any notes at all , really wish i had so will use this not only to show the build process but to record they things that have worked at the track and those that didnt - changing to a 14 tooth front sprocket is the first of meany examples of that i think , but i would rather try some thing a fail , put my results on here cause some one else my look at from a different point of view or expreance . just because i have been around drag racing 25 plus years and made 1000's of passes i dont even start to claim to know it all , and as for making GSX 1100 go fast there are people out there that will have forgotten more than i will ever know ..........
